THE Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Malaysia (CBCM), the Council of Churches of Malaysia (CCM) and the National Evangelical Christian Fellowship Malaysia (NECF) send Merdeka and Malaysia Day Greetings.

Merdeka Day marks our freedom from colonial rule and the journey towards nationhood. Malaysia Day marks the moment Malaya, Sabah and Sarawak came together to form a new nation: Malaysia.

Out of that formation a shared identity was established. Regardless of ethnicity, religion or historical background, we are all Malaysians — one people, bound together as one nation.

That shared identity calls us to build a united society for the common good of all Malaysians. We are entrusted with a rich diversity, a strong social fabric and abundant national resources — ours to steward for the prosperity, wellbeing and flourishing of everyone in this nation.

Unity does not mean uniformity; it is unity in diversity. Our strength lies in our capacity to respect, celebrate and work alongside one another while holding on to our distinct identities, cultures and beliefs. This is what makes Malaysia special.

Let us not take these blessings of our nation’s uniqueness, for granted. What has been given to us from above can be lost if we fail to cherish and guard it. We must stay alert to divisive elements, narrow perspectives and extreme ideologies that seek to fracture our unity and threaten our shared future.

As we mark another milestone in our journey as an independent nation, let us proudly raise the Jalur Gemilang — the banner that unites us — in our homes, workplaces and houses of worship. May we continue to walk hand in hand with our fellow Malaysians, building a nation founded on mutual respect, unity, justice and peace.

The Christian Federation of Malaysia wishes all Malaysians a blessed and meaningful Merdeka Day and Malaysia Day.

In accordance with the directive of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Malaysia, Singapore, and Brunei, and in preparation for the Malaysia Pastoral Convention 2026—scheduled for Sep 9 to 13 2026 in Sibu, Sarawak—Most Reverend Archbishop John Wong calls upon all faithful across the Archdiocese to dedicate Sep 4 2026 as a Day of Fasting and Prayer.

Everyone is encouraged to observe this day through individual acts of penance and devotion to support this major gathering of the Church.

All parishes are also asked to arrange community intercessory initiatives—such as adoration hours, rosary recitations, and prayer vigils—enabling our entire archdiocesan family to join together in seeking the Holy Spirit’s wisdom for this significant milestone.

May our collective prayers deepen unity across the Church in Malaysia and align our hearts with God’s holy purpose.

Next year, the Solemnity of All Saints falls on Monday, Nov 1 2027. This Solemnity is a holy day of obligation within our region.

For pastoral reasons, the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Malaysia, Singapore, and Brunei – in consultation with the Episcopal Regional Liturgy Commission – has decided to bring forward the celebration of All Saints to Sunday, Oct 31 2027.

Please take note of the following liturgical schedule:

• Saturday, Oct 30 2027: Sunset Masses will celebrate the Solemnity of All Saints

• Sunday, Oct 31 2027: All Masses will celebrate the Solemnity of All Saints

• Monday, Nov 1 2027: Masses will follow the liturgy for the 31st Week in Ordinary Time

Please also note that the Solemnity of Christmas, which falls on Saturday, Dec 25 2027, remains unchanged.

This year, the Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary falls on Saturday, Aug 15 2026. Both this Solemnity and the following Sunday, Aug 16, are holy days of obligation within our region.

For pastoral reasons, the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Malaysia, Singapore, and Brunei – in consultation with the Episcopal Regional Liturgy Commission has transferred the celebration of the Solemnity of the Assumption to Sunday, Aug 16 2026.

Therefore, the Masses on this weekend will celebrate the Assumption, fulfilling your holy day of obligation.

His Grace, Most Reverend Archbishop John Wong, has officially announced the new appointments to the College of Consultors during the Clergy Meeting held on May 6 2026 at Bundu Tuhan.

These appointments follow the retirement of two long-serving members. The changes are effective immediately.

1. New Appointments

Dear People of God,

The Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Malaysia, Singapore and Brunei received a letter from the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Korea (CBCK), to advise all the clergy, religious, and faithful to refrain from participating in any events associated with Julia Youn (also known as Julia Kim) of Naju. The faithful are cautioned against attending Masses, liturgies, or sacraments in private places associated with her, and not to be misled by online media regarding her problems.

Please be informed that the Archdiocese of Gwangju, Korea, in close communication with the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith (now the Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith), had issued several official notices (in 1998, 2001, 2005, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2011, 2012) admonishing the faithful not to be swayed by the agitation of Julia Youn and her followers. Despite these official diocesan prohibitions, Julia Youn and her followers continue to defy the Magisterium, and spread false claim that the Church’s official recognition of the alleged ‘Miracle of the Blessed Mother of Naju’ is imminent. These actions are causing confusion among many of the faithful.

The Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Malaysia, Singapore and Brunei is in agreement with the Archdiocese of Gwangju in that the actions and attitudes of Julia Youn and her followers are not in accord with Catholic practice and they are not promoting a sound devotion.

Dear People of God,

The celebration of the second day of Chinese New Year falls on Ash Wednesday, Feb 18 2026, being a day of fast and abstinence.

The Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Malaysia, Singapore and Brunei, in consultation with the Episcopal Regional Liturgy Commission of Malaysia, Singapore and Brunei hereby gives dispensation from fast and abstinence on Ash Wednesday, Feb 18 2026. However, the tradition of celebrating the Liturgy of Ash Wednesday on that day is to be maintained with the imposition of ashes.

All Catholic faithful are encouraged to perform their fast and abstinence on another day during Lent except on Good Friday, which is already a day of fast and abstinence.
