BARU-BARU ini saya berbesar hati apabila Uskup Agung Andrew Nkea dari Bamenda di Cameroon tinggal di Procure, Roma. Semasa dia seorang pelajar, dia telah tinggal di sini selama empat tahun.

Salah satu perbualan kami mencetuskan memori saya bahawa kami pernah bertemu sebelum ini, dan perspektifnya telah sangat mempengaruhi pemikiran saya tentang merekrut ahli daripada misi kami.

Pada masa itu dia berkata, “Keputusan Mill Hill untuk merekrut calon dari wilayah misi kami adalah satu kesilapan kerana keuskupan itu adalah bapa dan saudara Mill Hill. Mereka datang tanpa apa-apa untuk memperkaya dan membina keuskupan, dan gereja, seminari, chapel, sekolah, hospital dan lain-lain menjadi milik keuskupan. Tidak seperti jemaah lain, di mana bangunan mereka menjadi hak milik jemaah masing-masing. Oleh itu, keputusan untuk merekrut ahli dari misi menjadikan Mill Hill lebih seperti yang lain, seperti mereka, mempunyai mesyuarat Mill Hill, rumah dsb. Keputusan itu menjadikan Mill Hillers tidak lagi sebahagian daripada paderi keuskupan.”

Sungguh karisma yang kuat! Pertubuhan Mill Hill adalah anugerah besar daripada Tuhan kepada gereja tempatan yang mereka injili. Bersedia untuk menjadi miskin, mereka menjadikan gereja-gereja tempatan kaya! 

Saya fikir ini mempunyai kaitan dengan apa yang saya mula hargai tentang Gereja semasa tinggal di sini iaitu Roma. Banyak skandal yang menjejaskan Gereja di mana-mana bahagian dunia, akan tetapi ini nampaknya tidak mengecewakan Gereja di Roma dengan cara yang sama.

Misalnya, apabila orang di negara-negara meninggalkan Gereja kerana penderaan, salah urus kewangan, tidak suka atau bergaduh dengan individu, kemungkinan besar orang tidak akan melakukannya di Roma. Kenapa?

Gereja dilihat sebagai anugerah Tuhan. Anda mungkin tidak menyukai pemberian itu atau membuang hadiah itu, tetapi ia tetap pemberian Tuhan. Anda tidak boleh menolak pemberiannya atau memulakan Gereja anda, kerana apabila anda berbuat demikian, Gereja yang anda mulakan bukan lagi pemberian Tuhan. Ia menjadi hadiah John, Tom, Dick atau (secara sejarah) Luther, Calvin dll. Mereka menjadi pemiliknya.

Apabila anda dibaptis, Tuhan berkata kepada anda, seperti ketika Dia berkata kepada Yesus, “Engkaulah AnakKu yang Kukasihi” (Markus 1:11)! Anda menjadi anak Tuhan dan anak yang merupakan sebahagian daripada keluarga Tuhan. Ini tidak boleh anda nafikan, sama seperti anda tidak boleh menafikan sebagai anak kepada ibu bapa anda. Sekali Kristian, sentiasa Kristian. Ia tidak bergantung pada sama ada anda baik atau buruk, setia atau tidak setia, menafikan atau meninggalkan gereja, atau bahkan memulakan gereja anda sendiri. 

Gereja bukanlah seperti mana-mana komuniti, persatuan, persekutuan dan lain-lain yang mana kita boleh menjadi ahli atau membatalkan keahlian kita. Seperti yang dikatakan oleh Santo Paulus, “Kita semua yang telah dibaptis dalam Kristus, telah dibaptis dalam kematianNya” (Roma 6:3). Ya, dalam pembaptisan kita bercakap tentang kematian seseorang, seperti yang dapat dilihat dalam surat Santo Paulus kepada umat di Roma.

Sebagai seorang paderi yang baru ditahbiskan yang bersemangat, tetapi tidak sensitif, saya berkhotbah semasa pembaptisan anak saudara perempuan saya tentang kematian. Tidak perlu dikatakan, ibu bapa dan terutamanya datuk nenek tidak bersedia untuk mesej ini. Ibu bapa terkejut, dan datuk nenek marah kepada saya, dan saya dapat melihat mengapa. Pada masa itu, saya berkata secara literal kepada ibu bapa muda “Anak anda akan mati apabila saya membenamkannya ke dalam air ini, tetapi dia akan menerima kehidupan baru, identiti baru – dia bukan lagi anak anda, tetapi anak Tuhan”.

Alangkah gembiranya apabila mengetahui bahawa Gereja dan orang yang dibaptiskan adalah anugerah daripada Tuhan! Kita boleh pilih samada menyumbang ke arah cahayanya (seperti contoh Mill Hill di atas) atau mengurangkannya, tetapi kita tidak boleh memusnahkannya! “Kamu adalah terang dunia… kamu adalah garam dunia” (Matius 5:13-16).

 Oleh itu, persoalannya bukanlah “apa yang boleh Gereja lakukan untuk saya, tetapi apa yang boleh saya lakukan untuk Gereja.

 Soalan:

  • Dalam Ekaristi (= Kesyukuran)kita mesti berterima kasih kepada Tuhan terutama untuk …..?
  • Apa yang salah dengan homili saya sebagai seorang paderi muda?

Fr Guido Gockel MHM

Seorang ahli St Joseph’s Missionary Society of Mill Hill, berpusat di London, Father Guido ditahbis menjadi paderi pada tahun 1969. Sejurus selepas pentahbisannya, dia diutus ke Malaysia (Sarawak) di mana dia melayani sebagai misionaris selama 18 tahun.

Sewaktu bercuti di Sabah, dia diperkenalkan kepada sekumpulan anak muda yang terlibat dengan Pergerakan Karismatik (CCR). Pengalaman ini membantunya menjadi instrumental dalam memperkenalkan CCR di Miri, Sarawak, di mana dia diberi misi di stasi luar.

Setelah tujuh tahun tempoh misionarisnya yang pertama pada awal tahun 70-an, dia kembali ke Malaysia untuk tiga lagi misi dan banyak lawatan jangka pendek. Dia tahu berbahasa ‘Melayu pasar’ dan lain-lain Bahasa negeri Sarawak.

Catholic Sabah berpeluang mendekati Fr Guido, yang sangat bermurah hati memberi masanya untuk menulis selama satu tahun di bawah kolum bertajuk “I’m On My Way”, sejak pelancaran portal online Catholic Sabah pada tahun 2020.

Berbekal sedikit galakan, Fr Guido bersetuju untuk terus menulis, dan Catholic Sabah membuat keputusan untuk memuat naik penulisannya sekali sebulan, dalam Bahasa Inggeris dan Bahasa Melayu.
