MELAKA – The English Catechetical Ministry of the Church of St Theresa recently undertook a meaningful outreach to Victory Home in Durian Tunggal — a visit that went beyond charity and became a living expression of faith. This mission brought together 15 catechism students, five catechists, and several families in a shared experience of compassion and Christian service.
Victory Home serves as a sanctuary for approximately 25 children, aged 1 to 18, who come from disadvantaged and often neglected backgrounds. Into this space of both hardship and hope, our students entered—not simply as visitors, but as companions in faith and joy.
More than an act of giving, this mission aimed to awaken hearts. For many students who grow up in stable, loving environments, the visit was an eye-opening experience. It helped them step outside their comfort zones and come face-to-face with the realities others live daily. Through this, they were encouraged to reflect on their own blessings and recognise how God’s grace often works quietly in their lives.
The day began with warm introductions and ice-breakers, followed by engaging games, action songs, a shared meal, and many heartfelt moments of connection. Despite differences in background, the language of kindness, presence, and love bridged every gap. The children of Victory Home responded with joy and openness, while our students showed genuine empathy, curiosity, and care.
Student reflections revealed the depth of the experience. One shared, “This visit made me realise how blessed I am and how much I’ve taken for granted.” Another noted, “Even though the children have gone through a lot, they were still smiling. I learned that joy is possible even in hardship.”
These moments affirmed a powerful truth — faith is not just taught in classrooms — it is lived, especially in how we respond to the poor and vulnerable. This mission planted seeds of mercy, gratitude, and solidarity in young hearts, reminding all involved that being Catholic is not merely about doctrine, but about love in action.
Sincere thanks to the families, catechists, volunteers, and the team at Victory Home for making this day possible. As Jesus reminds us in Matthew 25:40: “Whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of Mine, you did for Me.”
