Harapan di dalam wad kecemasan hospital

Bagaimana pengalaman di dalam wad kecemasan yang terlalu panjang di Hospital “San Camillo” Rom memberi makna baharu kepada Perumpamaan Orang Samaria yang Baik Hati, dan panggilan Bapa Suci Fransiskus untuk menjadi sama.

Tiga hari yang saya habiskan di dalam bilik kecemasan hospital Rom yang mengharukan baru-baru ini, hanya boleh digambarkan sebagai menakutkan dan sangat mencabar. Tetapi mereka juga merupakan pelajaran hidup yang secara tidak dijangka memperbaharui harapan saya dalam kemanusiaan di tengah-tengah kegelapan global, ketidakpastian dan ketakutan.

Pesakit

Dalam bilik kecemasan, semua orang adalah sama. Penyakit menolak segala-galanya, ia mengurangkan kita, dan menghilangkan kita dari semua hiasan. Kebanyakan pesakit adalah warga emas, keliru dan takut. Seperti orang lain, mereka mendambakan hubungan dan keselesaan di tengah-tengah kesedihan kerana terputus hubungan daripada orang yang mereka sayangi. Jadi, setiap kali pesakit lain yang lebih sihat melangkah masuk untuk menghulurkan kata-kata yang baik, atau picitan tangan yang pantas, bayang-bayang itu dihalau, walaupun hanya seketika.

Kakitangan

Doktor, jururawat, pelatih, tukang cuci, pegawai pesanan yang membawa makanan; semuanya diperluaskan. Kekacauan dan kekecohan menimbulkan adegan dari Dante’s Inferno. Semua orang memanggil serentak, merayu untuk melegakan kesakitan dan jawapan kepada soalan. Semua orang memerlukan sesuatu: air, makanan, oksigen, telefon yang berfungsi, membantu dalam mencari sepasang cermin mata yang hilang. Terdapat pesakit yang perlu dibendung supaya mereka tidak membahayakan diri mereka sendiri. Ramai yang menjerit, ada yang menangis, yang lain berdoa, dan ada yang terlalu menyendiri seolah-olah mereka telah berputus asa sama sekali. Lampin ditukar secara diam-diam di sudut dan juga di tengah-tengah bilik. Wanita dan lelaki, tua dan tidak begitu muda, disapu, dibasuh, dan dibalut dengan rasa hormat dan penjagaan yang teguh tetapi lembut.

Pelajaran

Di sana di bilik kecemasan bahawa perkataan “rahmat” membawa makna baru bagi saya. Tiba-tiba saya memahami jemputan Bapa Suci Fransiskus untuk menjadi seperti orang Samaria yang Baik Hati, seseorang yang “menunjukkan gaya hidup, yang pusatnya bukan diri kita sendiri, tetapi orang lain, dengan kesukaran mereka, yang kita temui di jalan kita dan yang mencabar kita”. Bagaimanakah saya boleh melupakan cabaran untuk bertemu dengan mata bingung seorang lelaki muda dari Bangladesh semasa saya membantu doktor menerangkan kepadanya dalam bahasa Inggeris bahawa dia tidak akan sembuh daripada Penyakit Crohn? Atau cabaran melihat air mata lelaki yang mengalami simptom strok, pasti dia akan mati sebelum sempat mengucapkan selamat tinggal kepada isteri dan anak perempuannya. “Dia seorang pemuzik,” katanya dengan bangga, “dia bermain biola di Opera Rom”. Semasa saya sendiri didorong pergi, dia menggenggam tangan saya, satu-satunya talian hayatnya pada masa itu, seutas harapan. Melepaskan juga mencabar. Dan memerhatikan wanita yang biasanya pemarah di atas katil sebelah meluahkan semua penjagaan seorang ibu terhadap anaknya ketika dia dengan sabar menyuap seorang wanita berusia 86 tahun yang dia tidak mempunyai sebarang kaitan, saya tercabar untuk bertanya kepada diri sendiri sama ada saya akan melakukan perkara yang sama.

Orang Samaria yang baik hati

Begitu banyak cerita. Begitu banyak penderitaan. Tetapi di wad kecemasan itu, seperti di tempat lain di seluruh dunia, mereka yang menjaga dan mereka yang dijaga, semuanya disambungkan oleh benang yang sama iaitu memberi dan menerima. Dalam dunia konflik dan huru-hara, ketidakadilan dan perpecahan, masih terdapat begitu banyak orang Samaria yang Baik hati yang terus menawarkan tangan penyembuhan mereka, tangan yang dipenuhi dengan belas kasihan dan belas kasihan. Dan itu sendiri sudah cukup untuk memperbaharui harapan saya dalam kemanusiaan.
