TANJUNG ARU – Sr Cabrini Florence Mobilik has ended her earthly journey and gone home to the Lord on Monday, Aug 3 at 8.35am.

Sr Cabrini at her Golden Jubilee in 2018

She breathed her last at KPJ Specialist Centre in Luyang in the presence of two of her community members, the Franciscan Sisters of the Immaculate Conception (FSIC).

Catholic Sabah spoke to Sr Lilian Unsoh, one of the councillor members of FSIC.

“Sr Cabrini was diagnosed with cancer of the colon but didn’t undergo operation. It was at the beginning of this year that her sickness became quite serious. She was in and out of KPJ for review.

“She had to be admitted a few times until at the last stage of her life, she had a foot infection as her foot became swollen and on Monday morning on Aug 3, her health condition changed and she was immediately brought to KPJ.

She breathed her last that day itself, at 8.35 am, in the presence of two of our FSIC Sisters,” said Sr Lilian.

The funeral service for Sr Cabrini was held at Stella Maris Senior Home on Wednesday Aug 5, with SOP strictly observed and with proper protocol in place, due to RMCO.

Archbishop John Wong led the service and offered words of reflection to the people present including Sr Cabrini’s family members who came from as far as Tawau and Sandakan.

“Death is not the end for those who believe in Him, none of us can avoid death,” he said, and comforted the grieving family members that “death is the final transformation of this earthly journey to eternal life.”

FSIC Mother General, Frances Mani said that the community is praying for Sr Cabrini all day and night, “We never left an hour without praying for her.”

She also offered words of gratitude to all present, “Thank you, all Sr Cabrini’s family members for taking care of Sr Cabrini and for bringing the food during the wake.

She thanked the sisters in the Senior Home led by Mother Grace Deosing, “Thank you for your patience and for taking turn two by two to sleep with her (when she fell ill).”

She was also asking the sisters to offer Mass for Sr Cabrini at least once in their respective community.

The remains of Sr Cabrini was buried at Roman Catholic Cemetery, Mile 4 1/2, Old Penampang Road.

Her life as religious sister

Sr Cabrini Mobilik @ Florence Mobilik, was born on Nov 21, 1949 to Vincent Mobilik and Christina Sipangol. Hailed from Kg Nosoob Penampang, she was the eldest daughter and the third in the family of 12 siblings (five girls and sevens boys) of whom one among the brothers is a LaSallian Brother, in the person of Brother Justin Mobilik FSP.

She was baptised as Lilia Florina, on Dec 8, 1949 at St Michael Church Penampang by Fr A. Antonissen. Her other name in her birth certificate and Identification Card was Florence.

She was admitted to the Franciscan Sisters of the Immaculate Conception as a Postulant on Jan 15, 1966, and entered Novitiate on the same year on Aug 15. She took her first vows on Aug 15, 1968 and her final vows on Dec 22, 1973.

She celebrated her Silver Jubilee on Nov 25 1993, her Ruby Jubilee on Oct 4 2008 and her Golden Jubilee on Apr 21 2018, at Sacred Heart Cathedral Kota Kinabalu.

She had been posted to most of the outstation convents throughout Sabah and even as far as the remotest place like Paitan, helping out in the mission around the year 2003 and 2004.

She was well known to help couples with the Natural Family Planning and was often invited by the Family Life Commission to give talks on Natural Family Planning.

In the last few years of her service she was transferred to St Joseph Convent Penampang as she was no longer physically strong. After two years in Penampang, she was transferred to Stella Maris Home Tanjung Aru in March 2019, the FSIC Home for elderly and sick Sisters.
