Paus berduka dengan ‘kehilangan banyak nyawa’ akibat gempa di Turki, Suriah

Paus Fransiskus menyampaikan “kedekatan spiritual” dan “solidaritas” dengan mereka yang terkena dampak gempa dahsyat yang melanda Turki dan Suriah pada 6 Februari.

Survei Geologi Amerika Serikat menyebutkan gempa berkekuatan 7,8 SR   melanda Turki selatan sebelum fajar pada 6 Februari menimbulkan  malapetaka di sebagian besar wilayah tetangganya Suriah.

Menjelang sore waktu setempat, Associated Press melaporkan lebih dari 3.000 orang tewas sementara ratusan lainnya masih terjebak di bawah reruntuhan bangunan yang roboh.

Bantuan amal Gereja Katolik mengatakan seorang imam Katolik termasuk di antara yang tewas di Suriah. Pastor Imad Daher meninggal akibat runtuhnya kediaman Uskup Agung Emeritus Aleppo, Mgr. Melkite Jean-Clement Jeanbart,  yang terluka dan dirawat di rumah sakit, kata badan amal itu.

Paus Fransiskus merasa “sangat sedih” mengetahui “kehilangan besar nyawa” yang disebabkan oleh bencana tersebut dan menyampaikan “belasungkawa yang tulus” kapad para korban, tulis Kardinal Pietro Parolin, Menteri Luar Negeri Vatikan, dalam telegram kepada Duta Besar Vatikan di Turki dan Suriah.

Paus juga berdoa agar para personel yang “mendukung  perawatan mereka yang terluka dan dalam upaya bantuan yang berkelanjutan dengan karunia ketabahan dan ketekunan.”

Menurut Presiden Turki Recep Tayyip Erdogan, gempa tersebut merupakan bencana terbesar yang melanda negara itu sejak 1939, ketika gempa berkekuatan 7,8 SR menewaskan lebih dari 32.000 orang dan melukai lebih dari 100.000 orang. Tidak jelas seberapa tinggi jumlah korban tewas dan terluka akibat gempa bumi 6 Februari itu, tambahnya.

Presiden Turki mengatakan lebih dari 45 negara telah menawarkan untuk mendukung Turki dalam upaya bantuan selain NATO dan Uni Eropa.

Dewan Gereja Timur Tengah, yang mewakili Gereja Ortodoks, Injili, dan Gereja Katolik, mengeluarkan pernyataan yang meminta masyarakat internasional untuk memberikan bantuan darurat ke wilayah tersebut dan mencabut sanksi terhadap Suriah “agar sanksi tidak berubah menjadi kejahatan terhadap kemanusiaan.”

Hanya beberapa jam setelah gempa, Knights of Malta mengumumkan bahwa Malteser International, lembaga bantuan mereka, mengirimkan tim tanggap darurat.

“Mitra lokal kami sangat membutuhkan dukungan, terutama di wilayah Suriah utara di mana ratusan ribu orang tinggal di tempat perlindungan sederhana dan sekarang, dengan gempa bumi, mereka bahkan lebih tidak berdaya,” kata Oliver Hochedez, kepala Departemen Tanggap Darurat Internasional Malteser.

“Di rumah sakit yang dijalankan oleh organisasi mitra kami, jumlah korban luka yang tiba meningkat setiap jam. Kami harus memberikan bantuan dengan cepat.”

Uskup Aleppo, Mgr.  Antoine Audo mengatakan kepada Vatican News pada 6 Februari bahwa dia belum pernah melihat kehancuran seperti itu di Suriah yang dilanda perang.

“Ada ketakutan yang kuat dan sekarang orang-orang berada di jalanan, dalam cuaca dingin dan hujan,” katanya. “Ada kerusakan di mana-mana, bahkan di katedral. Perpustakaan hancur, rumah-rumah hancur.”

Caritas Internationalis, badan amal Katolik nasional, segera memulai kampanye penggalangan dana untuk upaya bantuan di Turki dan Suriah. Badan amal tersebut telah aktif di Turki sejak 1991 dan di Suriah sejak 2011, terutama memberikan bantuan bagi para pengungsi. – UCA News Indonesia
