PENAMPANG – A group of seven widows participated in a two-day, one-night Widows’ Retreat held on Aug 23–24, 2025, at Majalaba Homestay in Penampang. The retreat, consisting of five sessions, centered on the theme from Mat 11:28: “Come to Me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.”
The event featured talks delivered by speakers from the Handmaids of the Lord, a ministry of Couples for Christ, including Maribel Chu, Karen Sigawal, and Chelsia James, all of whom are widows themselves. Having previously taken part in the retreat, they felt inspired to share their personal journeys and the insights they gained through the spiritual experience. Reflecting the biblical assurance in Ps 68:5 that “God in His holy dwelling is a father to the fatherless and a defender of widows,” the retreat emphasized divine care and support. Annie Chu, the team leader, facilitated activities following each session and ensured the program ran smoothly.
After the retreat, participants were asked two questions: How did they feel after attending the retreat and what are their plans moving forward?
Their responses were as follows:
Angeline Wayan:
“I now better understand the challenges widows face and feel empowered to overcome them with God’s help, embracing a hopeful and fruitful life. With God’s grace, I plan to take greater responsibility for my own happiness and share Jesus’ invitation with other widows.”
