SPARKS of Grace: A Catholic Understanding of Marriage

KUCHING — What is God’s plan for us through marriage? What is Catholic marriage and what makes it different from other marriages? These were among the questions raised during an event recently organised by SEEKERS – “SPARKS of Grace: A Catholic Understanding of Marriage”.

What was intended as a follow-up to last year’s SPARKS (also organised by SEEKERS) turned out to be entirely different as we delved deeper. The emphasis this time was on encouraging inquisitiveness and promoting a healthy learning environment where the central theme of marriage within the Catholic Church was explored.

A surprising crowd of 40 participants turned up at Good Shepherd Hall, Holy Trinity Church on Feb 26 2025, with a refreshing mix of single individuals, those in serious relationships, and married couples. Indeed, we were blessed by the presence of two couples who had been married for 24 years, generously sharing their experiences and life lessons with the rest.

The evening kicked off with a competitive quiz on Kahoot as a warm-up for each participant to gauge their knowledge and understanding of sacramental marriage. Prizes were given to the top three players with the highest scores. This was followed by a Question and Answer session addressing the foundation of marriage in the Catholic Church based on scripture and theology. After that, we explored the questions submitted by participants prior to the event.

We then watched a compelling video session on FORMED entitled, “Beloved: Finding Happiness in Marriage”, presented by amazing speakers including Edward Sri, Tim Gray, Leah Darrow, and Chris Stefanick.

Subsequently, we discussed the contents of the video session in smaller groups. This gave the participants the chance to explore and learn more from each other’s understanding and experiences. Suffice to say, this was the highlight of the evening.

In conclusion, “SPARKS of Grace” provided a platform for people at various stages of discernment to deepen their appreciation and understanding of sacramental marriage, exploring this challenging yet fulfilling call to holiness and ultimately embracing and living out this vocation centred on God’s unfailing, eternal love.

We would like to take this opportunity to introduce SEEKERS, a welcoming home for young adults who are seeking God, growing deeper in faith, and serving Him in their lives. Our vision is to be a community where young adults journey together, encounter God, and inspire each other to live authentically in Christ.

Whether you joined us for SPARKS or are discovering us for the first time, we invite you to walk this faith journey with us. Join our WhatsApp group chat or stay connected via social media for updates on future events! – Today’s Catholic
