SIBU — The Thanksgiving Dinner of Sacred Heart Cathedral Parish on Oct 17 2025 was a joyful celebration of gratitude, faith, and togetherness as the parish marked the 40th Anniversary of the Cathedral.
In his address, Bishop Joseph Hii recalled the consecration of Sacred Heart Cathedral forty years ago, which coincided with the installation of Bishop Emeritus Dominic Su as the first Bishop of Sibu. He reminded the faithful that the Cathedral is the mother Church of the Diocese of Sibu, providing leadership and direction for all parishes.
Bishop Joseph thanked everyone for their love, support, and dedication, reminding them that each person shares in the mission that God has entrusted to the Diocese.
Organising Chairman Mr Gabriel Saing expressed heartfelt appreciation to all brothers and sisters who contributed to making the celebration possible. He noted that the 40th Anniversary was marked in a lower-key, smaller-scale manner out of respect for Bishop Emeritus Dominic Su’s recent health challenges, while also rejoicing in his speedy recovery.
Parish Pastoral Council Chairman Mr Stephen Wong reflected on the meaning of “Thanksgiving,” formed by “Thanks” and “Giving.”
He led all present in giving thanks to Almighty God — for Bishop Emeritus Dominic Su, whose courageous “Yes” forty years ago led to the formation of the Diocese and Cathedral; for Bishop Joseph Hii, who continues to nurture and strengthen the Cathedral community; and for Rector Fr Philip Hu and all priests, past and present, who have faithfully served.
He also gave thanks for the Legion of Mary Movement, the Jubilee Year 2025, and the Grotto of Mary Immaculate, launched on Sep 8 2025. Mr Wong reminded everyone that true thanksgiving naturally leads to giving — of time, effort, and resources in service to God and His Church.
In his message, Rector Fr Philip Hu expressed his joy in witnessing the Cathedral’s various language apostolates and communities working together in harmony, embracing their diversity in race, culture, and language. He described this unity as a true witness of synodality — walking together as brothers and sisters in Christ, in communion, participation, and mission.
Fr Philip also shared his happiness over the continued recovery of Bishop Emeritus Dominic Su, who, though not present physically, “is with us in spirit.”
The celebration also saw the coming together of various parish movements and communities, who presented cultural dances, songs, and performances as joyful expressions of their love, happiness, and unity in the Lord.
The evening concluded in warm fellowship and praise, reminding all that thanksgiving and giving go hand in hand in the life of the Church.
