Uskup Nikaragua dijatuhi hukuman penjara lebih dari 26 tahun

Nikaragua telah membebaskan lebih dari 200 tahanan politik, termasuk para imam Katolik, mahasiswa dan penentang rezim, yang diambil dari tahanan dalam kondisi menyedihkan dan dikirim ke Amerika Serikat (AS).

Uskup Matagalpa, Mgr. Rolando Álvarez termasuk di antara tahanan politik yang termasuk dalam daftar pembebasan dan pengasingan, tetapi dia menolak untuk meninggalkan negara itu.

Dia dijatuhi hukuman selama 26 tahun dan 4 bulan penjara pada 10 Februari, menurut laporan media.

Sejumlah media di negara Amerika Tengah itu melaporkan 222 tahanan politik terbang ke AS pada 9 Februari, di mana mereka akan diberikan perlindungan.

The New York Times melaporkan rezim Presiden Daniel Ortega tidak meminta apa pun sebagai imbalan pembebasan tahanan politik, tetapi mengutip seorang pejabat pemerintahan Biden yang mengatakan Nikaragua berharap dapat meningkatkan hubungan di antara kedua negara.

“Pembebasan orang-orang ini, salah satunya adalah warga negara AS, oleh Pemerintah Nikaragua menandai langkah konstruktif untuk mengatasi pelanggaran hak asasi manusia (HAM) di negara tersebut dan membuka pintu untuk dialog lebih lanjut di antara AS dan Nikaragua mengenai masalah-masalah yang menjadi perhatian,” kata Menteri Luar Negeri AS Anthony Blinken dalam pernyataan, 9 Februari.

“Perkembangan hari ini adalah produk diplomasi AS, dan kami akan terus mendukung rakyat Nikaragua.”

Pesawat yang membawa para tahanan telah mendarat di Washington pada siang waktu setempat.

Dalam pernyataan video yang dikeluarkan pada 9 Februari, hakim Nikaragua Octavio Rothschuh memerintahkan para tahanan politik “dideportasi” dari Nikaragua.

“Orang-orang yang dideportasi dinyatakan sebagai pengkhianat negara. Mereka berada di AS dan dengan cara ini, kami menyimpulkan hukuman deportasi,” kata Rothschuh.

Nama-nama para tahanan tidak dirilis, tetapi media Nikaragua dan para pastor di pengasingan mengatakan daftar itu termasuk para imam yang dihukum dalam persidangan palsu atas konspirasi dan menyebarkan informasi palsu.

Daftar tersebut juga termasuk kandidat oposisi yang dihukum oleh Ortega sebelum pemilihan tahun 2021 — hasil yang ditolak oleh pejabat AS dan Eropa.

Organisasi berita Independen Nikaragua, Confidencial, melaporkan enam orang termasuk imam, dihukum penjara selama 10 tahun atas tuduhan konspirasi oleh pengadilan Nikaragua pada 6 Februari, sedang dalam penerbangan ke AS.

Daftar tersebut termasuk Pastor Ramiro Tijerino, Pastor José Luis Díaz dan Pastor Sadiel Eugarrios; Diakon Raúl Antonio Vega; Frater Darvin Leiva dan Frater Melkin Centeno; dan juru kamera Sergio Cárdenas — semuanya dari Keuskupan Matagalpa.

Imam lain, Pastor Óscar Danilo Benavidez, yang ditangkap 14 Agustus dan dijatuhi hukuman pada 5 Februari atas tuduhan serupa, juga dilaporkan ikut dalam penerbangan itu.

Uskup Álvarez, seorang pengkritik rezim yang vokal, dipindahkan dari tahanan rumah, tempat dia ditahan sejak Agustus 2022, ke penjara Modelo yang terkenal kejam.

Uskup sebelumnya menolak untuk melarikan diri dari negara itu, meskipun penganiayaan meningkat.

Namun, pada 10 Februari, seorang hakim Nikaragua menghukum Uskup Álvarez dengan 26 tahun 4 bulan penjara, dan mencabut kewarganegaraannya dengan tuduhan pengkhianatan dan “merusak integritas bangsa.”

Uskup Auksilier Silvio José Baez mencuit pada 9 Februari: “Saya sangat gembira bahwa tahanan politik di Nikaragua dikeluarkan dari penjara. Saya berterima kasih kepada Tuhan untuk mereka! Mereka seharusnya tidak menjadi tahanan.

Uskup Baez melayani Keuskupan Agung Managua di Nikaragua tetapi sekarang tinggal di pengasingan di Miami. Dia melarikan diri dari negara itu tahun 2019 setelah menghadapi ancaman pembunuhan karena mengkritik pemerintah.

“Gereja itu penting karena masih menjadi salah satu institusi dengan kepercayaan terbesar di kalangan masyarakat,” kata Tiziano Breda, peneliti di Institut Urusan Internasional Italia, kepada OSV News.

Penganiayaan terhadap umat Katolik Nikaragua telah menyebabkan kekhawatiran internasional dan rasa solidaritas dari konferensi-konferensi waligereja dari seluruh dunia.

“Kami mengikuti dengan sedih dan prihatin situasi di Nikaragua,” kata Kardinal Jean-Claude Hollerich, uskup Luksemburg, ketua Komisi Konferensi-konferensi Waligereja Uni Eropa (COMECE), dalam surat tertanggal 6 Februari kepada Uskup Jinotega, Mgr. Carlos Enrique Herrera Gutiérrez, ketua Konferensi Waligereja Nikaragua.

“Sebagai uskup COMECE, kami berkomitmen untuk mempromosikan kebebasan, demokrasi, dan keadilan di Nikaragua melalui dialog rutin kami dengan perwakilan lembaga Uni Eropa,” tambah Kardinal Hollerich.

“Jangan ragu bahwa sebagai COMECE kami akan melakukan segala daya kami dengan lembaga-lembaga Eropa untuk (pembebasan uskup) dan mempromosikan kebebasan, supremasi hukum, keadilan dan demokrasi di negara tercinta Anda,” katanya.

Paus Fransiskus telah berbicara dengan agak hangat tentang Nikaragua, di mana rezim tersebut mengusir Duta Besar Vatikan, Uskup Agung Waldemar Stanislaw Sommertag, pada Maret 2022.
