VIETNAM – The early winter light shone through the windows of Son Loc Cathedral on Nov 11, reflecting off the white vestments of 19 young men kneeling before the altar. It was ordination day in Hung Hoa diocese, a mission territory stretching across the northern highlands of Vietnam, where Catholic communities live in forests, valleys, and along winding mountain paths.
Among the new priests was Father Antonio Cao Linh Son, who wrote to me moments after the Mass: “I felt light and overwhelmed with happiness when I wore the priestly vestment. It was the first time I realized how small I was before such a great grace God has given me. Even though I had carefully prepared myself, I still cannot believe I am really a priest. I’m very happy now.”
His words revealed a deeply personal truth: no matter how solemn the ritual, the priesthood begins with a young man humbled by a grace larger than himself.
A fertile yet demanding terrain
Across Vietnam, priestly vocations continue to grow. More than 6.8 million Catholics live in the country, served by around 6,800 priests, and more than 270 new priests are ordained each year. This abundance stands in contrast to many parts of the world, where seminaries are closing due to a lack of candidates.
Yet the flourishing of vocations cannot be understood without considering Vietnam’s cultural soil. Father Joseph Dinh Quang Hoan, a priest from the Thai Binh diocese, once observed that Vietnamese families still see having a priest in the family as a blessing. Faith is transmitted in the home and nurtured by parish life and the witness of older priests who have lived through war, poverty, and political complexities.
But the expectations placed on young priests are shaped by more than faith. Vietnam’s Confucian heritage grants moral authority to teachers and leaders, and this reverence easily transfers to the priesthood. Many Catholics instinctively look to their priests as figures of high moral stature.
The respect is sincere, yet it can create a distance that young priests may find challenging to navigate. One seminarian from the highlands admitted that as a child, he believed priests never made mistakes and that seminary formation taught him that the priesthood means learning to accept one’s humanity.
Between reverence and emotional devotion
Vietnamese Catholicism is also marked by emotional devotion. People are moved by stirring liturgies, touching homilies and shared communal experiences of faith. The growing presence of singing priests and online Catholic figures has deepened this emotional character. It brings life to the Church but also pressures priests to be impressive or engaging in ways that do not always reflect the quiet rhythm of pastoral care.
A young priest serving in the mountains said that while some people judge priests by their preaching or online presence, what local communities truly value is a priest who can walk into remote villages, visit families in their homes, and listen to their struggles. His comment reflects a pastoral reality in Hung Hoa: the core mission of the priest is not to be admired, but to be present.
A missionary identity shaped by readiness
This spirit of availability was evident in Father Son’s first reflections after ordination. “As part of a mission diocese,” he said, “I remind myself that I must always be ready if I am sent to the highlands. The willingness to go wherever needed is the characteristic of Hung Hoa.”
His words capture the heart of a missionary vocation — one defined by readiness rather than recognition, and by presence more than performance. It is the willingness to go to places others overlook and to accompany people whose lives are shaped by hardship and endurance.
Such a calling demands more than theological knowledge. It requires emotional steadiness, pastoral creativity, and cultural sensitivity. It asks young priests to speak to young people facing rapid social change, to serve families bearing both material and spiritual burdens, and to enter communities where poverty and faith often coexist.
Formation and shared responsibility
Vietnamese seminaries have begun to expand formation to include human development, counseling and communication. Yet many young priests note that their deepest learning begins only after ordination, when they live among the people. For this reason, the Church must create space for them to grow through real experience, even through mistakes. A Church that fears failure risks hindering its own renewal.
Laypeople also play a crucial role. A Catholic from Hung Hoa remarked that priests may be God’s servants, but they are also human. Communities that elevate priests too high risk isolating them, while communities that walk with them allow both priest and people to grow. A more mature, discerning laity is essential for a healthier future.
Walking between two worlds
Vietnam’s abundant vocations are a blessing, but also a test of depth and authenticity. The future of the Church depends not on numbers alone but on whether young priests can carry their mission with humility, adapt to change without losing their pastoral heart, and serve not as distant authority figures but as companions on the journey of life.
The sight of Father Antonio Cao Linh Sơn and his fellow ordinands kneeling before the altar on that November morning is a reminder that a new generation is learning to stand between two worlds: one that reveres the priest as a moral figure, and another that asks him to be close, gentle and ready to walk the mountain paths with those he serves.
Pope Francis has said that a priest does not live to be moved but to awaken hope in others. For Vietnam’s young priests stepping into the highlands of Hung Hoa, awakening that quiet and steady hope may be the most urgent vocation of all. – UCA News
