Bapa Suci Fransiskus mengingati Hari Dorothy, mencari Tuhan yang mengasihi orang miskin

Bapa Suci Fransiskus menulis mukadimah kepada edisi Itali autobiografi Hari Dorothy, bertajuk, “Saya menemukan Tuhan melalui orang miskin-Nya. Daripada ateisme kepada iman: perjalanan batin saya” (Libreria Editrice Vaticana-LEV). Hari Dorothy (1897-1980), pengasas Pergerakan Pekerja Katolik, wartawan, penulis, pasifis dan aktivis, dikenang kerana komitmennya terhadap golongan miskin dan sosial keadilan.

Dalam kata pengantarnya kepada terjemahan Itali bagi autobiografi Dorothy Day, Bapa Suci Fransiskus mengimbas kembali bagaimana dia sampai kepada iman Kristian daripada “rahmat yang mengalir dari amal, keindahan yang mengalir dari kesaksian, dan cinta yang dinyatakan secara konkrit” melalui perkhidmatan, lebih daripada apa-apa usaha atau strategi manusia. Dia teringat bagaimana Bapa Suci Benedict XVI berkata bahawa Gereja berkembang melalui tarikan, bukan dengan proselitisme, dan kita melihat ini dalam penukaran, kehidupan dan kesaksian Dorothy Day.

Mengisytiharkan Hamba Tuhan pada tahun 2000, American Dorothy Day (1897-1980) mendedikasikan hidupnya untuk keadilan sosial dan hak asasi manusia, terutamanya golongan miskin, pekerja yang dieksploitasi, dipinggirkan oleh masyarakat. Bapa memberi penghormatan kepada tulisan saksi hidupnya bahawa kita semua boleh belajar daripada kegelisahannya, pemahamannya tentang Gereja, dan bagaimana dia melayani orang lain.

Sentiasa mencari

Menggambarkan kegelisahan Hari Dorothy, Pope menulis tentang laluannya daripada meninggalkan amalan agama kepada menemuinya sekali lagi, kerana dia sentiasa mencari dan terbuka kepada pencarian rohani yang membawanya untuk menemui semula kepercayaan kepada Tuhan, melihatnya sebagai kepenuhan kehidupan dan mereka menuju kebahagiaan. Dorothy datang untuk melihat Tuhan bukan sahaja penghiburan kami, tetapi pemenuhan keinginan kami untuk makna dan kegembiraan.

Bapa Suci menulis bagaimana “Tuhan mendambakan hati yang gelisah, bukan jiwa borjuasi yang berpuas hati dengan apa yang ada.” Dia menerangkan bagaimana Tuhan memberi kita “api kasih ilahi yang membuahkan hasil yang indah, benar dan benar berdiam di dalam hati setiap orang.” Laluan Dorothy Day menunjukkan kepada kita “suatu pengembaraan yang baik untuk hati,” tulis Bapa Suci, dalam menanggapi dan menerima kasih Tuhan untuk kita.

Gereja, memimpin kita kepada Tuhan

Bapa Suci kemudian melihat kata-kata indah Dorothy Day untuk Gereja Katolik, walaupun terdapat kegagalan dan kelemahan ahli-ahlinya. “Apabila kepatuhannya kepada kebenaran iman bertambah, begitu juga pertimbangannya tentang sifat ketuhanan Gereja Katolik,” tulis Bapa Suci. Tetapi dia mengiktiraf kelemahan ahli Gereja dengan “sikap jujur ​​dan tercerahkan” yang masih dapat melihat dengan jelas gambaran besar “panggilan dan identiti Gereja: realiti ilahi, bukan manusia yang membawa kita kepada Tuhan dan dengan mana Tuhan dapat sampai kepada kita.”

Perkhidmatan menyatakan cinta Tuhan

Jangkauan konkrit Dorothy Day untuk membantu orang lain sebagai aktivis dan wartawan “menjadi semacam ‘lebuh raya’ yang dengannya Tuhan menyentuh hatinya,” tulis Bapa Suci. Dan dia menunjukkan bagaimana perjuangan untuk keadilan menawarkan cara untuk merealisasikan impian Tuhan untuk umat manusia yang didamaikan. Bapa Suci menambah bahawa walaupun hari ini orang yang beriman dan tidak percaya boleh menjadi “sekutu dalam mempromosikan maruah setiap orang apabila mereka mengasihi dan melayani orang yang paling ditinggalkan.”
