KINARUT – Joy and hope permeated the atmosphere at St Augustine’s Church in Kinarut as hundreds of Catholic faithful from all zones under the patronage of the parish gathered to celebrate Christmas on Jan 7. The event was led with enthusiasm by Parish Priest Fr Wilfred Atin. Beyond commemorating the birth of Jesus Christ, the occasion marked a historic moment with the celebration of the 24th priestly anniversary of Fr Lawrence Kim and the 7th anniversary of Fr Andrew Kim.
The peak of joy was reached as the congregation came together to celebrate the dedication and service of both of the Korean clergy. Prayers and expressions of gratitude poured forth from the hearts of the faithful, reflecting deep appreciation for the two priests who have guided and served the community with love.
In an emotionally-charged speech, Fr Atin expressed, “I am delighted to celebrate Christmas with everyone today, marking the first time St Augustine’s Church commemorates Christmas at the parish level after being officially recognized as a parish. This is not only a celebration of faith but also a historical milestone for all of us, reflecting our collective journey. It serves as evidence of the growth and strength of our community, highlighting the steadfast commitment and dedication of every parishioner in constructing a vibrant and flourishing spiritual home.”
The presence of Datuk Juil Nuatim, Limbahau state assemblyman, added a special radiance to the celebration. Datuk Nuatim has donated RM100,000 for the construction of the parish’s rectory. “This contribution is our commitment to supporting the development and maintenance of the place of worship, where our spirits unite,” he said.
Various entertaining performances took place throughout the event. In addition to the communal feast, all attendees enjoyed captivating presentations by representatives from each zone and committee. The ceremony concluded with Fr Atin announcing that Bisuang zone (St Paul, Bisuang Kaiduan) would host the parish-level Christmas in 2024. The celebration closed with a final prayer.
The Christmas celebration at St Augustine’s Church in Kinarut was not only a worship event but also a historic occasion that will be remembered by the entire community. With gratitude and hope, the congregation left the hall of St Augustine’s Church with hearts filled with happiness and confidence in God’s constant presence, which strengthened them.
