BUKIT MERTAJAM – A young pilgrim’s remarkable journey of faith and compassion has captured hearts across Malaysia. Jownathan Roy Michael, a youth from Seremban, completed a prayer-filled pilgrimage on foot to the Minor Basilica of St Anne in Bukit Mertajam, Penang — a journey of over 300 kilometres — in time for the Feast of St Anne 2025.
Dubbed the “Walk of Hope,” Jownathan’s pilgrimage was far more than a physical feat. At every step, every church and rest stop along the way, he lifted up prayers for those most in need — the sick, the dying, the hungry, the orphaned, the forgotten, the barren, and victims of injustice.
“This pilgrimage was not just a physical act, but a spiritual offering,” Jownathan shared. “Faith isn’t just something we carry — it’s something we walk out, every day, together.”
He also expressed deep gratitude to those who supported his journey through companionship, prayer, and charitable donations. “Your generosity gave this journey even deeper meaning. You helped turn prayer into action, and hope into help.”
In a message welcoming Jownathan and all pilgrims to the annual feast, Cardinal Sebastian Francis, Bishop of Penang, praised the young man’s witness of faith and solidarity.
Calling him a true grandson of St Anne, the cardinal highlighted the purpose behind Jownathan’s pilgrimage: to walk on behalf of the oppressed and victims of corruption and exploitation — a powerful reminder of the Church’s call to be a voice for the voiceless.
Cardinal Sebastian also warmly welcomed all pilgrims to the Feast of St Anne, extending his blessings with a heartfelt message: “You are all pilgrims of hope.” – Herald Malaysia
