First reading Acts 11:19-26
They started preaching to the Greeks, proclaiming the Lord Jesus
Responsorial Psalm 86(87)
O praise the Lord, all you nations!
or
Alleluia!
On the holy mountain is his city
cherished by the Lord.
The Lord prefers the gates of Zion
to all Jacob’s dwellings.
Of you are told glorious things,
O city of God!
‘Babylon and Egypt I will count
among those who know me;
Philistia, Tyre, Ethiopia,
these will be her children
and Zion shall be called “Mother”
for all shall be her children.’
It is he, the Lord Most High,
who gives each his place.
In his register of peoples he writes:
‘These are her children,’
and while they dance they will sing:
‘In you all find their home.’
Gospel John 10:22-30
The Father and I are one
It was the time when the feast of Dedication was being celebrated in Jerusalem. It was winter, and Jesus was in the Temple walking up and down in the Portico of Solomon. The Jews gathered round him and said, ‘How much longer are you going to keep us in suspense? If you are the Christ, tell us plainly.’ Jesus replied:
Listen, know and follow
“The sheep that belong to me listen to my voice; I know them and they follow me” (The gospel). In the gospel today, Jesus tells us what it means to be His sheep, His true disciples: to listen to Him, to know Him and to follow Him. Listening to Jesus is not easy, especially in a world filled with noise. Many external voices compete for our attention, convincing us that we need to buy and possess all kinds of worldly items and gadgets to be popular and successful. We also grapple with internal voices that undermine our self-worth, telling us that we are not good enough or lovable enough. As sheep belonging to the Shepherd, we need to take the time and space to be in silence and listen to the voice of our Shepherd, who continually reminds us, “You are loved.”
Listening to Jesus’ voice forms the foundation for knowing and following Him. When we listen to His voice of love, we want to know Him by entering into a personal relationship with Him. This connection gives us the courage to follow Him as He guides us toward a meaningful life, a fruitful life.
Reflective question:
Does my life reflect my belonging to Jesus?
