Kepada para paderi, religius dan umat awam di Keuskupan Agung,
Salam damai kepada anda sekalian!

Ketika saya menulis kepada anda Surat Pastoral yang bertarikh 5 Julai 2020, negara kita sedang berada di peringkat Perintah Kawalan Pergerakan Pemulihan (PKPP). Pada masa itu, kes positif Covid-19 harian menurun secara mendadak kepada satu angka yang membolehkan paroki-paroki kita mengadakan Misa semula di gereja.

Hari ini keadaan sudah berubah. Dalam beberapa minggu kebelakangan ini, kita telah menyaksikan peningkatan jangkitan Covid-19 yang membimbangkan di Sabah (pada 24 Oktober sahaja terdapat 889 kes baru!) dan jumlah kluster baru semakin menambah. Pelbagai sebab dan alasan telah disiarkan di media untuk menyalahkan pihak lawan. Permainan saling menyalahkan ini masih berterusan.

Sebenarnya, peningkatan kes itu bukan sahaja berlaku di Sabah. Sesetengah negara di Eropah juga sedang mengalami gelombang kedua. Misalnya, Jerman dan Perancis menunjukan rekod yang tinggi. Itali dan Sepanyol juga tergesa-gesa untuk mengambil langkah yang ketat. Republik Czech pula mengumumkan lockdown di seluruh negara. Kes positif di AS dan India juga semakin meningkat.

Dengan penguatkuasaan semula Perintah Kawalan Pergerakan Bersyarat (PKPB) hampir di semua daerah di Sabah, kita kini kembali kepada keadaan separuh lockdown di mana Misa kita terpaksa dirayakan secara online seperti yang sebelum ini. Kegiatan pastoral akan dijalankan jika ada kepentingan dan keadaan yang mendesak sahaja.

Kerajaan kita baru sahaja melanjutkan PKPB selama dua minggu, iaitu dari 27hb Oktober hingga ke 9hb November. Ramai di antara kita terpaksa bekerja dari rumah. Bagi mereka yang kehilangan pendapatan atau diberhentikan kerja, keadaan mereka pasti lebih menyedihkan. Sambil tindakbalas kerajaan kena menyeimbangkan ekonomi dan kesihatan awam, permainan politik di negara ini adalah seperti “menambah garam kepada luka”.

Nampaknya covid-19 ini akan berada bersama kita untuk jangka masa yang panjang. Virus itu merebak seperti roller coaster dan akan berterusan bergantung kepada sejauh mana kebersihan diri dipandang serius. Oleh itu Kementerian Kesihatan telah menyarankan bahawa satu-satunya cara untuk meratakan lengkung (mengurangkan kes positif covid-19) adalah mematuhi kepada empat amalan, iaitu memakai pelitup muka, membasuh tangan dengan kerap, mengelakkan pergi ke tempat yang sesak, dan mengekalkan penjarakan sosial. Kita telah berjaya melakukan perkara ini dahulu dan saya rasa kita jangan berhenti melakukannya.

Dalam menangani cabaran pandernik ini, barisan hadapan terutamanya mereka dalam perkhidmatan perubatan dan keselamatan adalah orang-orang yang terpaksa menanggung kegagalan masyarakat untuk mematuhi SOP. Ada di antara mereka telah dijangkiti dan ada yang terbeban dengan tuntutan perkhidmatan mereka. Marilah kita berdoa untuk mereka dan memberi mereka kata-kata semangat dan perangsang.

Kepada anda yang dijangkiti atau telah kehilangan seseorang yang dikasihi akibat Covid-19, saya ingin mengucapkan rasa simpati dan akan sentiasa berdoa untuk anda. Saya berharap anda semua akan tenang dan berpaling kepada Tuhan untuk mendapatkan kekuatan dan penghiburan. Dalam saat-saat seperti ini, hanya Tuhan sahaja yang boleh menyembuhkan semua kesakitan psikologi dan emosi.

Dalam surat saya yang lepas, saya ada bertanya dua soalan penting:

“Apa yang telah kita pelajari dari lockdown ini?

Apakah ingin Tuhan katakan kepada dunia hari ini?”

Di sini saya ingin menambah lagi:

Apakah Tuhan ingin beritahu kita tentang situasi di negara kita? Ke manakah arah tuju kita?

Apakah yang boleh kita lakukan untuk membetulkan atau memperbaiki situasi kita?

Apa yang boleh kita lakukan untuk membantu sesama untuk menangani keadaan ekonomi dan kesihatan awam?

Pandemik ini mendorong kita untuk berfikir secara global dan bertindak secara lokal.

Sebagai umat Katolik, iman kita menuntut kita untuk berfokus kepada Tuhan apabila “bot hampir tenggelam” (rj. Mt 14:28-31); dan pada masa yang sama kita dipanggil untuk “menyampaikan khabar baik kepada orang-orang miskin, memberitakan pembebasan kepada orang-orang tawanan, dan penglihatan bagi orang-orang buta, dan membebaskan orang-orang yang tertindas” (rj. Lk 4:19-20). Marilah kita kekal tabah dalam iman dan jangan pernah kehilangan fokus terhadap misi kita di bumi ini walaupun dilanda pandemik!

Kekal selamat dan jangan berputus asa!
