Bapa Suci Fransiskus: ‘Laluan ke arah ketahanan iklim yang dihalang oleh ketamakan jangka pendek’

Bapa Suci Fransiskus menyampaikan ucapan kepada peserta dalam sidang kemuncak Vatikan mengenai krisis iklim, dan menggalakkan masyarakat antarabangsa untuk memanfaatkan kuasa penjanaan semula alam untuk bergerak ke arah daya tahan iklim.

Akademi Sains dan Sains Sosial Pontifikal menganjurkan sidang kemuncak tiga hari di Vatican yang menghimpunkan datuk bandar, gabenor dan pakar untuk meneroka tema: “Dari Krisis Iklim kepada Ketahanan Iklim.”

Bapa Suci Fransiskus mengadakan pertemuan dengan peserta dalam sidang kemuncak pada hari Khamis, hari kedua acara itu.

Dalam ucapannya, Bapa Suci mengeluh data yang semakin buruk mengenai perubahan iklim, menyeru tindakan segera “untuk melindungi manusia dan alam semula jadi.”

Memandangkan negara membangun lebih menderita akibat perubahan iklim secara langsung, beliau bertanya kepada pemimpin politik dari pelbagai negara sama ada “kita bekerja untuk budaya hidup atau untuk budaya kematian”.

“Negara yang lebih kaya, sekitar 1 bilion orang, menghasilkan lebih separuh daripada bahan pencemar yang memerangkap haba,” kata Bapa Suci. “Sebaliknya, 3 bilion orang miskin menyumbang kurang daripada 10%, namun mereka mengalami 75% daripada kerosakan yang terhasil.”

Daripada mangsa krisis iklim kepada agen perubahan

Bapa Suci Fransiskus mengingatkan bahawa kemusnahan alam sekitar adalah “satu kesalahan terhadap Tuhan” dan “dosa struktur” yang membahayakan semua orang.

“Kami mendapati diri kami berdepan dengan cabaran sistemik yang berbeza namun saling berkaitan: perubahan iklim, kehilangan biodiversiti, kerosakan alam sekitar, ketaksamaan global, kekurangan jaminan makanan dan ancaman terhadap maruah rakyat yang terjejas oleh mereka,” katanya.

Setiap isu ini, tambah Bapa suci, mesti ditangani dengan segera dan secara kolektif untuk melindungi golongan miskin di dunia, terutamanya wanita dan kanak-kanak, yang menanggung beban yang tidak seimbang.

Namun, katanya, wanita yang sama itu bukan sekadar mangsa perubahan iklim tetapi juga “kuasa yang kuat untuk daya tahan dan penyesuaian.”

Memerangi ketamakan dan jangka pendek

Bapa Suci mengecam politik global dan nasional yang menghalang tindakan untuk melindungi mereka yang paling terdedah kepada perubahan iklim.

“Kemajuan yang teratur,” katanya, “tertahan oleh mengejar keuntungan jangka pendek secara tamak dengan mencemarkan industri dan oleh penyebaran maklumat yang salah, yang menjana kekeliruan dan menghalang usaha kolektif untuk perubahan dalam haluan.”

Komuniti dibubarkan dan keluarga sedang bersurai secara paksa, katanya, sambil menambah bahawa pencemaran atmosfera meragut berjuta-juta nyawa setiap tahun.

Kira-kira 3.5 bilion orang terdedah kepada perubahan iklim dan oleh itu lebih cenderung untuk berhijrah, meletakkan nyawa mereka dalam risiko semasa “perjalanan terdesak.”

Rayuan untuk peralihan politik

Sebagai tindak balas kepada krisis ini, Bapa Suci Fransiskus menambah suaranya kepada rayuan ikhlas yang dilancarkan oleh ahli sidang kemuncak itu.

Bersama mereka, beliau menyeru “pendekatan universal dan aktiviti tegas” untuk membawa perubahan arah politik.

Bapa Suci juga menekankan keperluan untuk “menyongsangkan keluk pemanasan global” dengan mengurangkan separuh kadar pemanasan dalam tempoh 25 tahun akan datang.

Akhirnya, beliau menggesa penggubal dasar untuk memanfaatkan kuasa penjanaan semula alam semula jadi untuk mengeluarkan sejumlah besar karbon dioksida dari atmosfera. Beliau menyebut terutamanya Lembangan Amazon dan Congo, rawa gambut, bakau, lautan, terumbu karang, tanah ladang, dan tudung ais glasier.

“Pendekatan holistik ini boleh memerangi perubahan iklim, di samping menghadapi krisis berganda kehilangan biodiversiti dan ketidaksamaan dengan memupuk ekosistem yang mengekalkan kehidupan,” katanya.

Segera, belas kasihan, tekad

Kesimpulannya, Bapa Suci Fransiskus menjemput usaha untuk mewujudkan sinergi dan perpaduan global, serta “seni bina kewangan baharu,” untuk bertindak balas terhadap keperluan negara-negara Selatan dan pulau global yang terjejas akibat kecemasan iklim.

“Terdapat keperluan untuk bertindak dengan segera, belas kasihan dan keazaman, kerana taruhannya tidak mungkin lebih tinggi.”
