Pandemik COVID-19 dan Laudato Si oleh Prof Dr Ramesh Boonratana, Konsultan Komisi ACJC

Apa dan bagaimanakah hubungan di antara “Pandemik COVID-19 dan Laudato Si”? Pada ketika ini semua orang menerima impak pandemik ini secara langsung atau secara tidak langsung. Satu hari nanti vaksin akan pasti ditemui tetapi ekonomi dan segi lain kehidupan akan mengambil masa yang lama untuk dipulihkan, itu pun bukan semua boleh dipulihkan umpamanya kehilangan nyawa.

Oleh kerana itu saya ingin bercakap sedikit sebanyak tentang pandemik Covid-19 dan kaitannya dengan Laudato Si’.

COVID-19 adalah sejenis coronavirus yang baru tetapi coronavirus bukanlah sesuatu yang baru, ia telah lama wujud. Coronavirus merujuk kepada satu kumpulan virus yang besar yang menjejaskan haiwan. Coronavirus ini sekali-sekala akan melompat dari haiwan ke manusia. Coronavirus ini menyebabkan pelbagai penyakit dari selsema sehingga penyakit yang lebih teruk seperti Mers and Sars.

Tetapi ini bukan bermaksud semua haiwan akan terkena jangkitan Coronavirus. Haiwan pun seperti kita juga, ada sesetengah individu yang berpenyakit dan ada juga yang tidak berpenyakit. Bukan semua haiwan itu akan menjangkiti kita. Biasanya penyakit itu akan kekal dengan spesies tersebut.

Tetapi apabila haiwan yang sakit itu merapati dengan spesies yang lain, di sanalah coronavirus itu berpindah dari satu spesies ke spesies yang lain. Sekiranya coronavirus yang sudah berpindah itu dapat hidup di dalam tuannya yang baru, maka inilah yang akan memberi ancaman kepada spesies yang lain.

Bagaimana Covid-19 berpindah kepada spesies yang lain? Sekiranya binatang liar seperti kelawar dibawa ke tamu atau menjadi binatang peliharaan, maka di sinilah virus itu boleh menjangkiti spesies yang lain termasuk manusia.

Bagaimana penyakit zoonotic disebarkan kepada manusia? Masalah besar adalah dari manusia sendiri iaitu manusia yang mendekati haiwan-haiwan liar. Walaupun terdapat banyak jenis makanan untuk dimakan oleh manusia seperti ayam, daging, sayur, buah-buahan, manusia tetap juga mahu memakan haiwan liar.

Pembelian haiwan liar juga boleh menjadi punca jangkitan yang mana selain dijadikan makanan, ia diambil untuk dijadikan ubat-ubatan, atau menjadi binatang peliharaan, atau disimpan di zoo dan lain-lain.

Kemusnahan hutan dan kemusnahan kediaman haiwan liar mengakibatkan kehilangan kediaman mereka dan di mana haiwan ini harus pergi? Maka itulah kita mendengar berita haiwan liar masuk kampung atau masuk bandar. Krisis perubahan iklim juga boleh menjadi punca jangkitan virus ini.

            Pandemik Covid-19 bukanlah pandemik yang pertama dan bukan juga yang terakhir yang akan berlaku. Pada pertengahan tahun 1300, seramai 75-200 juta orang mati akibat pandemik The Black Death. Plague of Justinian yang berlaku pada tahun 541, seramai 25 juta orang mati. Pada tahun 1918, seramai 20-50 juta orang mati akibat penyakit Influenza. Dan sebelum Covid-19 ini, pandemik HIV yang berkemuncak sekitar tahun 2005-2012 telah membunuh seramai 36 juta orang.

            Bagaimana pula dengan Covid-19, sehingga kini lebih dari 8 juta orang sudah terkena dengan penyakit ini dengan jumlah kematian lebih dari 400 ribu orang.

            Antara kesan dari pandemik Covid-19 ialah kematian, kehilangan sumber pendapatan, pengangguran, kehilangan keuntungan, kekurangan makanan, inflasi, krisis kewangan, kemorosotan industri-industri besar, penutupan sekolah-sekolah dan universiti, pembatalan acara atau aktiviti-aktiviti di semua peringkat, pembatalan aktiviti-aktiviti agama dan beribadah, sekatan perjalanan, keganasan rumahtangga, kehilangan hak-hak sivil, kemorosotan kesihatan mental, penambahan kes-kes bunuh diri dan lain-lain.

            Bagaimana kita menghalang daripada berlakunya lagi pandemik atau epidemik atau mengurangkan impaknya kepada kita? Senang saja, amalkan Laudato Si’.

            Jangan makan haiwan liar. Janganlah jual beli haiwan liar. Haiwan liar itu penting untuk menjaga hutan kita, untuk menyebarkan bijih benih tanaman kita. Penjagaan hutan secara langsung juga menjaga bekalan air kita.

            Elakkan pertanian monokultur secara besar-besaran. Amalkan pertanian secara lestari. Elakkan pembangunan yang tidak lestari. Rancangkan pembangunan infrastruktur dengan baik. Juga kenalpasti kawasan yang sesuai untuk semua jenis pembinaan seperti jalan raya, empangan, lapangan terbang dan lain-lainnya untuk mengelakkan masalah di masa hadapan.

            Contohnya Empangan Papar, lebih baik simpan dan jaga hutan itu kerana bekalan air akan terjamin untuk selama-lamanya. Jangan juga menimbun tanah lembab atau kawasan kolam untuk membina perumahan kerana apabila hujan, banjir akan berlaku dan bila tiada hujan, kemarau akan berlaku.

            Kita juga harus mengamalkan 9R dalam hidup kita dan dalam hal pentadbiran kita. Refuse (Menolak), Reduce (Mengurangkan), Re-gift (Menghadiahkan Semula), Reuse (Menggunakan Semula), Repair (Membaiki Semula), Repurpose/Upcycle (Memberi nilai semula), Recycle (Mengitar Semula), Regenerate (Menjana Semula), Rethink (Memikirkan Semula).

            Penting juga memilih pemimpin negara yang baik. Pilihlah pemimpin-pemimpin yang prihatin terhadap Rumah Sejagat kita. Carilah pemimpin-pemimpin yang tidak bertentangan dengan Laudato Si’.

Praktik Laudato Si harus diadaptasi untuk mengurangkan pandemik di masa depan. Bumi ini satu-satunya Rumah Sejagat kita oleh itu setiap insan harus mempraktikkan Laudato Si tanpa mengira kepercayaan kerana kesan kehilangan biodiversiti, krisis iklim, dan penyakit berjangkit mempengaruhi semua orang di dunia ini.
