Young Vietnamese Catholics are rediscovering the Latin Mass

Revival of Catholic tradition is being shaped by a new generation searching for roots it never inherited

By Alex Hoang

On a Sunday morning in Hanoi, a private home falls silent as the sanctuary bell rings.

In the living room, temporarily transformed into a chapel, a simple altar has been carefully prepared. Surrounded by clouds of incense, a visiting priest begins the Traditional Latin Mass. Gregorian chanting fills the room before prayers begin in Latin. Most of the congregation follows with bilingual missals, carefully turning each page as the liturgy unfolds.

The scene could easily belong to another century.

Instead, it is unfolding in modern Vietnam.

Even more surprising than the liturgy itself are the faces in the congregation. Most worshippers are in their twenties or thirties. They grew up attending the post-Vatican II Mass in Vietnamese. Many had never encountered the Traditional Latin Mass until they were adults.

Yet today they form the backbone of Vietnam’s small but growing traditionalist movement.

Their story challenges one of the most common assumptions about Catholic traditionalism: that it is driven by nostalgia.

In Vietnam, there is little nostalgia to begin with.

A global debate reaches Vietnam

Few issues have generated as much discussion within the Catholic Church in recent years as the Traditional Latin Mass.

In 2007, Pope Benedict XVI’s Summorum Pontificum made it significantly easier for priests to celebrate the 1962 Roman Missal. Fourteen years later, Pope Francis issued Traditionis Custodes, restoring greater authority to diocesan bishops to regulate its celebration in the interest of ecclesial unity.

In Europe and North America, traditionalist communities have often become associated with wider debates over the Second Vatican Council, Church authority and even political identity.

Vietnam has not been untouched by these debates.

But its traditionalist movement has developed under very different circumstances.

Rather than being led by Catholics who remember the pre-Vatican II Church, it is largely being shaped by people born decades after the liturgical reforms.

Discovering a tradition they never knew

Some first encountered the Traditional Latin Mass while studying or working abroad in countries such as Italy, France, Poland or the United States. Others found it through books, online lectures, YouTube channels and digital communities dedicated to Catholic history and liturgy.

Ironically, globalization has become one of the strongest forces behind Vietnam’s traditionalist revival.

International travel and the internet have introduced young Vietnamese Catholics to parts of the Church’s liturgical and theological heritage that many had never previously encountered.

Some went on to study Gregorian chant. Others began reading the Church Fathers, medieval spiritual writers and classical catechisms. Many even taught themselves enough liturgical Latin to follow the prayers.

“What first drew me to the Traditional Latin Mass was Gregorian chant,” said Joseph Christopher Nguyen Thien Tuan Hoang, who leads one of Vietnam’s traditional Catholic communities. “Its ancient melodies taught me that sacred music is not only about sound, but also about silence.”

What kept him coming back, however, was something deeper.

“I realized how closely the older liturgy reflected the faith I had learned from the elderly Catholics in my parish when I was a child,” he said. “It felt like rediscovering the way my ancestors had lived their faith.”

Unlike many Western traditionalists, Vietnam’s younger Catholics are not trying to recover memories of a lost past.

They are discovering a tradition they never inherited.

More than the Latin Mass

For many young Vietnamese traditionalists, the journey does not end with the liturgy itself.

Rediscovering the older rite has also led them back to forgotten parts of Vietnam’s own Catholic heritage.

“Along with the Latin Mass, we rediscovered a treasure of Vietnamese prayers and catechetical texts prepared by missionaries before the Second Vatican Council,” Hoang said. “They had already been adapted to Vietnamese culture and language. Few Catholic communities in Southeast Asia still possess such a rich heritage.”

For many members of the community, preserving these texts is not simply an exercise in historical curiosity. They see them as valuable resources for teaching the faith in language that generations of Vietnamese Catholics once understood naturally.

In that sense, Vietnam’s traditionalist revival is about more than preserving an older Roman liturgy. It is also about recovering a distinctly Vietnamese Catholic identity.

A movement without institutions

Unlike countries such as France or the United States, Vietnam has no established network of parishes dedicated to the Traditional Latin Mass. Instead, traditionalist communities remain small and loosely connected.

Many know one another through friendships, online groups or connections formed while studying overseas. Because opportunities to celebrate the older liturgy remain limited, a Mass is often organized only when circumstances permit, sometimes with the help of visiting foreign priests.

As a result, the movement has grown less through institutions than through personal networks.

Between misunderstanding and misunderstanding

Although relatively small, Vietnam’s traditionalist movement has not escaped controversy.

Within Catholic social media, discussions about the Latin Mass often become polarized. Some Catholics assume that anyone attached to the older liturgy must oppose the Second Vatican Council or reject Pope Francis.

Traditionalists argue that such assumptions fail to reflect reality.

“Our biggest challenge is not hostility, but misunderstanding,” Hoang said.

“If more Church leaders understood why some young Catholics are drawn to the older liturgy, I believe more people would have the opportunity to experience this part of the Church’s tradition.”

The movement also faces another challenge.

Some fringe groups have appropriated the language of “tradition” while promoting ideas that go beyond, or even contradict, official Catholic teaching. Their presence has made it more difficult for outsiders to distinguish between Catholics devoted to traditional liturgy and groups defined primarily by ideological opposition.

Searching for roots

Conversations with young Vietnamese traditionalists reveal a recurring theme.

Few begin by talking about Latin. Instead, they speak about silence, beauty and continuity.

They describe the Traditional Latin Mass as helping them pray with greater focus, while connecting them to generations of believers who came before them.

It is a search for something stable in an age of constant digital distraction and rapid social change.

Whether Vietnam’s traditionalist movement remains a niche community or gradually becomes more visible within the life of the local Church remains uncertain.

What is already clear, however, is that its revival is not being led by those looking backward.

It is being led by a generation looking deeper.

In many ways, Vietnam’s young traditionalists are not trying to recover a lost world.

They are discovering one they never inherited. – UCA News
