Hujan lebat, banjir kilat menyebabkan 37 maut di S. Korea

CHEONGJU, Korea –  Pasukan penyelamat bertungkus-lumus pada hari Ahad untuk menghubungi mereka yang terperangkap dalam terowong banjir di Korea Selatan, di mana sekurang-kurangnya 37 orang maut dan sembilan hilang selepas hujan lebat menyebabkan banjir dan tanah runtuh.

Korea Selatan berada di puncak musim tengkujuh musim panas, dan terdapat hujan lebat sejak empat hari lalu, menyebabkan empangan utama melimpah.

Kementerian Dalam Negeri melaporkan bahawa 37 orang terbunuh dan sembilan lagi hilang di seluruh negara dalam hujan lebat, kebanyakannya tertimbus oleh tanah runtuh atau selepas terjatuh ke dalam takungan banjir.

Beratus-ratus pekerja penyelamat masih bergelut untuk mengeluarkan lebih 10 kereta dan bilangan orang yang tidak diketahui terperangkap dalam terowong bawah tanah sepanjang 430 meter (1,410 kaki) di Cheongju, wilayah Chungcheong Utara, kata kementerian itu.

Apabila AFP tiba di lokasi pada Ahad, pekerja penyelamat cuba mengalirkan terowong untuk mencapai mangsa, tetapi air masih kelihatan terlalu dalam, menghalang usaha mencari.

Terowong itu ditenggelami pada pagi Sabtu selepas air banjir melanda terlalu cepat untuk kenderaan di dalam melarikan diri, menurut agensi berita Yonhap.

Lima orang telah diselamatkan dari sebuah bas di terowong pada hari Sabtu, dan sembilan mayat setakat ini telah ditarik dari tapak, dengan penyelam bekerja sepanjang masa mencari lebih banyak mangsa, kata kementerian dalam negeri.

Polis telah menerima laporan orang hilang bagi 11 orang yang dipercayai berada di dalam terowong itu, tetapi tol rasmi muktamad masih belum diberikan, kerana tidak jelas berapa ramai orang dalam setiap kereta, lapor Yonhap.

“Saya tiada harapan tetapi saya tidak boleh pergi,” kata ibu bapa salah seorang daripada mereka yang hilang dalam terowong itu kepada Yonhap.

“Hati saya sebak memikirkan betapa peritnya anak saya di dalam air sejuk.”

Imej yang disiarkan di televisyen tempatan menunjukkan aliran air deras dari sungai berhampiran yang telah memecah tebingnya membanjiri terowong, ketika pekerja penyelamat bergelut menggunakan bot untuk menyelamatkan orang di dalam.

Hujan berpanjangan

Presiden Korea Selatan Yoon Suk Yeol, yang kini dalam perjalanan ke luar negara, mengadakan mesyuarat tergempar dengan pembantunya mengenai tindak balas kerajaan, kata pejabatnya.

Terdahulu, beliau mengarahkan Perdana Menteri Han Duck-soo untuk menggerakkan semua sumber yang ada untuk meminimumkan kemalangan jiwa.

Majoriti mangsa — termasuk 19 yang maut dan lapan yang hilang — berasal dari wilayah Gyeongsang Utara dan sebahagian besarnya disebabkan oleh tanah runtuh besar di kawasan pergunungan yang menenggelamkan rumah dengan orang di dalamnya.

Beberapa orang yang dilaporkan hilang dihanyutkan apabila sungai melimpah di wilayah itu, kata kementerian dalam negeri, dan lebih 1,500 orang tidak dapat pulang selepas berpindah dari rumah mereka.

Pentadbiran Meteorologi Korea meramalkan hujan lebat berterusan sehingga Rabu, dan menggesa orang ramai untuk “menahan diri daripada keluar”.

Korea Selatan kerap dilanda banjir semasa musim tengkujuh musim panas, tetapi negara itu lazimnya bersiap sedia dan angka kematian biasanya agak rendah.

Para saintis berkata perubahan iklim telah menjadikan kejadian cuaca di seluruh dunia lebih ekstrem dan lebih kerap.

Korea Selatan mengalami hujan dan banjir yang memecahkan rekod tahun lalu, yang menyebabkan lebih 11 orang terkorban.

Mereka termasuk tiga orang yang maut terperangkap di pangsapuri bawah tanah Seoul.

Kerajaan berkata pada masa itu bahawa banjir 2022 adalah hujan paling lebat sejak rekod cuaca Seoul bermula 115 tahun lalu, menyalahkan perubahan iklim sebagai cuaca ekstrem. – UCA News
