Message from the National Synod Coordinator (Perutusan dari Koordinator Perhimpunan Malaysia Pra Sinode)

Dear Archbishops, Bishops, Sisters, Fathers, Friends in the Lord Jesus Christ,
Ke hadapan Uskup Agung, Para Bapa Uskup, Religius Sister, Para Paderi, Saudara dan Saudari yang terkasih dalam Kristus.

On behalf of our host Penang diocese, and particularly on behalf of the National Synod Team that has been working together for this assembly, I wish you all a very good morning and a warm welcome to each and every one.

I wish to welcome specially a brother, Mr Tan Kong Beng, the Executive Secretary of the Christian Federation of Malaysia (CFM). The Synod journey asks us to engage and grow in communion with the Christian churches and all peoples.

We are here at the first-ever Malaysia pre-Synod assembly or consultation thanks to the efforts of the synod teams and contact persons from the various dioceses, parishes, communities and kampungs. We are grateful and indebted to you the many unknown faces and names. Overcoming the challenges of the pandemic to compile the diocese report is the first miracle of the synod.

Since our bishops launched the synod journey in the respective dioceses of Malaysia on or around 17 October 2021, various methodologies were used to animate and listen to the voices of the people of God – surveys, google forms, online chats, group meetings, personal interviews, assemblies, etc.

Though in percentage the respondents may still be relatively small, in numbers the voices represent tens of thousands of people across a wide cross-section coming from Sabah, Sarawak & Semenanjung, from the:

  • geographical frontiers – urban cities to rural interiors without adequate infrastructure or internet access
  • existential peripheries – young people, women, children, orang asli, differently abled, LGBT, rural poor, and others
  • language & cultural groups – with different ways of perceiving the world and church, and in expressing their needs
  • Diverse ministries and vocation (single, married, clergy, religious) to hear the voice of God

Walaupun peratusan responden mungkin kelihatan kecil, secara kualitatif, puluhan ribu jumlah pungutan suara merentasi seluruh negara – Sabah, Sarawak dan Semenanjung, adalah datang dari;

The motivations encountered varied from enthusiasm and surprise – that they are being asked to share their opinion by mother church, to ignorance of the synodal process, indifference – if the exercise will make any difference, and resistances.

We can embrace these findings of the dioceses & national synod reports as a photograph of where we are today as people of God in Malaysia. “The joys and hopes, the griefs and anxieties of the people of God are captured here” – we do not need to touch-up this reality.

What is the orientation we will take today?

  • The diocese contact person will present the summary of the highlights of the synod journey and findings in their respective dioceses.

  • After lunch, we will hear a summary of the draft national report by the drafting team.

  • Today will be primarily a day of listening and discerning the voice and movement of the Holy Spirit in the life and mission of the Malaysian Church.

  • We will do this through the spiritual conversation method in small breakout groups, after all the presentations are done. We will close the spiritual conversation back in the large hall.

  • The days’ journey will be offered and celebrated in the Eucharist; followed by a fellowship meal. It is also a day of thanksgiving and celebration.

Your sharing and reflections will be picked up by the drafting team later and integrated into the draft national report. The report will be tabled and finalized at the meeting of the Catholic Bishops Conference of Malaysia-Singapore-Brunei (CBCMSB) on the 8th – 12th August 2022.

It will then be submitted, together with the reports from Singapore & Brunei, to the Synod Secretariat in Rome as well as the Federation of Asian Bishops Conferences (FABC). The FABC will meet in October 2022 for a continental level discussion based on the synod reports from about 25 countries. It coincides with the 50th Anniversary celebration of FABC. The Asian bishops’ reflections and report will then be submitted to the Synod Secretariat in Rome. These country report and continental reports, from around the world, will become the basis of the Instrumentum Laboris or working document when the Holy Father gathers the Synod of Bishops in Rome, in October 2023.

The recent text on the Spirituality of Synodality says that synodality is a spiritual practice or a way of life that needs to be learned. We can only learn by walking together. The journey of synodality is gently lowering some walls, or at least making some holes in them, and helping us to be more listening and vulnerable seperti resmi padi, makin berisi, makin tunduk – which is the opposite of powerful.

We are invited to inhabit this space of vulnerability – that is to know the truth of our lives and the life of the church today, to be listening to the cries of our brothers, sisters and creation, and the promptings of the Spirit. We are invited to learn-grow-trust and go beyond. Faith without such a vulnerability can become rigid and extremism. The invitation to vulnerability echoes the song of the servant-king in Philippians 2: 6-11 and Mary’s Magnificat in Luke 1: 46-55.

We journey together,

Berjalan bersama,

Charles Bertille

Executive Secretary, CBCMSB
