First, missionaries crossed oceans to bring the Gospel to Africa, introducing new ways of worship that reshaped communities and cultures. Today, history has turned a gentle but powerful page. As vocations diminish in parts of the West, the Church in the Global South is giving back by sending missionaries to re-evangelize lands that once evangelized them.
It is mission coming full circle, a living sign that the Church, as one body, is continually renewed by the Spirit. Sr Julie Eyaya, CSF, a sister of the Congregation of the Holy Family of Bergamo, is one of many religious women sustaining the Church through education and faithful presence.
Answering the call
Born in Congo, Sr Julie’s journey began with a simple yet demanding “yes.” In 2012, she left her homeland and traveled to unfamiliar surroundings in response to God’s call to religious life.
What followed was a period of formation rooted first in her own culture and later broadened beyond borders. Her vocation matured as she embraced missionary life with an open heart, ready to go wherever the need was greatest.
Bound by the vows of poverty, chastity, and obedience, Sr Julie surrendered not only comfort, but also entrusted her future fully to God’s guidance each day.
Missionary at heart, educator by calling
At the center of Sr Julie’s mission is education and formation. She carries with her the richness of two worlds—Africa and Europe—united in one universal call to service.
As a teacher and formator, she accompanies young women discerning religious life within her congregation, helping them seek clarity, purpose, and courage.
Her ministry also extends to early childhood education, where care goes beyond the classroom. She accompanies children and their families with patience and attentiveness, believing that education is deeply relational.
Through listening, presence, and personal witness, she transmits both human and Christian values in fidelity to the charism of her congregation.
Prayer, community and mission
Each day begins with personal and community prayer, the essential source that sustains her apostolic work. Her life revolves around educational responsibilities, service in early childhood education, and community life, always seeking to embody the educational charism of her congregation, marked by love, patience, responsibility, and a genuine family spirit.
“Children need love and security,” she emphasizes. “Families need educational support, and young people need to be accompanied with truth and trust.”
Through her presence, Sr Julie strives to create spaces of serenity and confidence where people feel welcomed and supported.
Quiet fruits of lasting hope
Sr Julie’s dedication is visible in small yet profound ways: children growing in peaceful environments and young people gaining courage in their vocational journey.
“These are the greatest joys in my life,” she says. “They reaffirm my calling and remind me that God works quietly but powerfully through everyday service.”
Her missionary journey has not been without challenges. Cultural differences, the weight of responsibility, and daily fatigue have tested her resolve. Yet she believes that each trial has shaped her into a more humble, patient, and open-hearted missionary.
She also expresses gratitude for the support of her religious community, which values and appreciates her presence among them.
A mission lived with joy
Reflecting on her path, Sr Julie affirms that being a missionary, especially among children, means loving and serving with joy. It is a life of self-giving, lived one day at a time, faithful to the small acts that build hope and shape the future.
Like Sr Julie, many religious sisters from Africa and other parts of the world embrace cultural and linguistic differences in order to bring the Gospel of Christ to places that once sent missionaries to their own lands. Through their spiritual richness and faithful service, they continue renewing the life of the Church. – Vatican News
