A letter to Catholic Families by Archbishop John Wong (ENG & BM)

A letter to Catholic Families by Archbishop John Wong (ENG & BM)

Jun 22 2022

TO all Catholic families in Sabah and all who follow closely to the proceedings of the World Meeting of Families 22-26 June 2022: Peace be with you!

In communion with Bishop Cornelius Piong and Bishop Julius Gitom, I pray that the Holy Family of Jesus, Mary and Joseph will remain firmly the model of your family life. The silent dedication of Joseph coupled with the simple faith of Mary and the loyal obedience of Jesus are perfect ingredients of a good family. May this be so in your family too!

We have just come out of the two-year lockdown. I know many of you have your stories to share, experiences which might have affected you personally or as a family during the pandemic.

I share the pains of those who have lost their loved ones without a proper farewell, and those who have to rebuild their family finance from the scratch. At the same time, I believe the pandemic has also brought about closer family ties and opportunities for self-development.

It would be nice if families could meet and reflect together those experiences and ask the questions: “What has the Lord taught us through the pandemic? What is the Spirit saying to my family?”

As the situation gradually improves, let us continue to keep our family intact and ensure it stays united in love in dealing with the hustle and bustle of this post pandemic era. Though inflations and higher cost of living are creating anxieties and burden to many, let us go through the economic storms in faith by focusing on the Lord (cf. Mt. 14:22-33) who has promised to be with us always until the end of time (cf. Mt 28:20).

The theme of the 2022 World Meeting of Families, “Family Love: A Vocation and A Path to Holiness”, reminds us that family life is a vocation, a calling by God to share and live out His love “for better, for worse, for richer, for poorer, in sickness and health” (cf. Marriage vows). This love, which is built on and deepened by a listening heart, is a path to holiness when forgiveness, reconciliation and healing take place. It is to be sustained by our constant listening to the Word of God and discerning His will.

Our family love should likewise flow out to our neighbourhood communities where our joy and serenity are the concrete testimonials of our faith. That love too has to be translated into social actions where, together with people of goodwill, we help to build a just and peaceful Sabahan society.

The pandemic has taught us the need to wait and listen with the heart, to one another and to the Lord. Let this be a new culture in living our family life. Praise God for the gift of family!

Yours in Christ,

Archbishop John Wong

Archdiocese of Kota Kinabalu

Surat kepada Keluarga Katolik oleh Uskup Agung John Wong

Jun 22 2022

Nampaknya keadaan mulai beransur pulih.

Puji Tuhan atas anugerah keluarga!

Dalam Kristus,

Uskup Agung John Wong

Keuskupan Agung Kota Kinabalu
