KOTA KINABALU – Sacred Heart Cathedral parish releases details of their Christmas celebrations in the parish.
Though predominated by the current COVID-19 prevention measures to minimize spread of the pandemic, the joy of Christmas, which the world cannot give, and which the pandemic cannot even deprive us of, continues to bring hope and generate joy in our heart.
The Cathedral parish reveals that its Christmas tree will be lighted on Dec 12 to mark the beginning of the phase two of Advent, where the Church liturgy will bring us to our celebration of Christmas, building up our sense of anticipation and fulfilment.

This year the pandemic necessitates the traditional house-to-house Christmas Carolling to share Christmas joy, peace and hope to go online. The inaugural virtual Christmas Carolling, which is organized by the parish youth, will be live streamed on SHC YouTube channel on Dec 20, beginning at 8.00 pm.
The main structure of the Nativity Crib is already set up at the main foyer of the parish centre and anticipated to be completed by Dec 20. Its design is crafted mostly from the natural materials of the bamboo and bears the resemblance of a native bamboo hut.
The Cathedral will open for Mass on Christmas Night and Christmas Day. Those who hold passes for the previous Masses will continue to use them. However, to cater for those who do not have a pass but who want to attend the physical Christmas Mass, the parish has decided to open the parish centre to accommodate 400 pax. The parish office will be issuing new passes on Dec 17 during office hours for those who have yet to collect passes for the Christmas Masses.
The schedule of the Christmas Masses is as follows:
Christmas Night (24th) – BM Mass @ 6.00 pm
English Mass @ 8.00 pm
Chinese Mass @ 7.00 pm (at CMI)
Christmas Day (25th) – Chinese Mass @ 7.00 am
English Mass @ 9.30 am
BM Mass @ 12 noon
This year there will be no singing of the Cantata before the Christmas Night Mass, a tradition of the Cathedral parish that has been one of the highlights most looked forward to.
All Christmas Masses will continue to be available on the Church’s YouTube channel for those who could not attend the physical Mass. – SHCP
