KARAMUNSING – Close to 300 parishioners of Sacred Heart Cathedral (SHC) were treated to a showcase of Filipino dances, songs and food at the Kababayan Cultural Arts & Food event organised by the Persatuan Kababayan Sabah (PKS), Oct 16 2022.

In his officiating speech, SHC Rector Rev Paul Lo said that there is a need to respect our culture as it enriches our life as we live as one people created by God.

PKS is a registered Association with the Registrar of Society (RoS). It is an Association of ‘Kababayan’ or countrymen from the various Islands of the Philippines with objectives, among others, to promote culture and sports.

PKS Chairman, Julius D Porly, expressed his sincere appreciation to Rev Paul for supporting PKS in its effort to raise fund by way of Kababayan Cultural Arts & Food event.

He thanked the many generous donors, vendors, committed PKS Executive Committee, members and friends for making the event possible and an interesting one. He said that similar event will be held again next Sunday morning, also in SHC.

Organising Chairlady, Maria Benedicto, said that there were 10 vendors who took part in the event.  

The entourage from the Sacred Heart Cathedral and the PKS Executive Committee were treated to authentic Filipino lunch, Filipino songs and dances.

Pork belly lechon

Among Filipino food on sale were Lechon or roasted pork belly, Pinakbit or mixed vegetable, pork cooked in Bagoong (shrimp paste), Adobo Manuk and steamed fish with coconut vinegar. Other than these, the event also offered sale of canned food stuff, Filipino dresses and men’s shirts.

PKS’ very own talented members presented Filipino songs, among others, Paggising Sa Umaga, Isang lahi, and Ang Tanging Alay Ko, and dances to the songs Pearly Shell from The Ocean, Cha Cha Pepito and Dahil Sayo.

PKS has also opened a counter to register new or renewal of membership. The event ended at 3:00 pm.
