King Charles III and Queen Consort Camilla

Britain’s new monarch, King Charles III, was formally declared head of state on Saturday during an historic accession ceremony, as he spoke of the ‘inspiring’ example set by his mother, Queen Elizabeth II, who died on Thursday at the age of 96.
King Charles, aged 73, succeeded his mother immediately on her death on Thursday at Balmoral Castle in Scotland, but was formally proclaimed King at an historic ceremony on Saturday in London’s St James’ Palace.
Also present at the ceremony was his son and heir, Prince William, the King’s wife Camilla, Britain’s new Prime Minister Liz Truss, six former premiers, and a gathering of senior politicians.
Making his personal declaration, the new King said he would carry out the heavy task that had been laid upon him and to which he now dedicated the rest of his life, and he prayed “for the guidance and help of Almighty God.”
Lifelong service of Queen Elizabeth
In an earlier address during the proclamation ceremony where he formally announced the death of the Queen, King Charles spoke of how his mother gave an ‘inspiring’ example of “lifelong love and of selfless service.”
The proclamation was then read out publicly from the balcony of St James’ Palace as trumpets played and the national anthem was sung and it was later read out in other locations throughout the United Kingdom.
Britain has declared a period of mourning until the state funeral for Queen Elizabeth who reigned for 70 years. She was the world’s oldest and longest serving head of state, and came to the throne in 1952 when she was just 25.
Outpouring of praise
Her death has drawn an outpouring of tributes from world leaders, including Pope Francis. For most Britons, Elizabeth was the only monarch they have ever known, and thousands have gathered at royal palaces to pay their respects with some shedding tears as they laid flowers.
In his first address to the nation as King on Friday, King Charles paid tribute to his mother’s warmth, humour and ability to see the best in people and vowed to serve the nation with loyalty, respect and love. – Vatican News
