PENANG – The nine permanent deacons of the Diocese of Penang met for their first gathering of the year at the Monsignor Aloysius Spirituality Centre on Feb 22. The event also marked the Jubilee of Deacons, a special occasion proclaimed by Pope Francis in May 2024 as part of the year’s jubilee celebrations. The gathering provided an opportunity for the deacons to reflect on the transformative impact of their ministry, serving as visible signs of Christ’s presence in their communities.
Joining the deacons were their spouses and candidates interested in the permanent diaconate. The gathering included two enriching sessions focused on the theme of the jubilee, with Fr Desmond Jansen as the guest speaker.
Fr Desmond led a thought-provoking session on the ministries and spirituality of a permanent deacon, drawing inspiration from the life of St Francis of Assisi. As the founder of the Franciscan family, St Francis, a permanent deacon himself, devoted his life to serving the poor, the marginalised, and those in need. His example remains a powerful model for permanent deacons today, emphasising their vital role in ministering to the people of God.
Permanent deacons, especially those who are married, play a unique and invaluable role in the Church, particularly in the Diocese of Penang. After the sessions, the deacons, along with their spouses and candidates, participated in a roundtable discussion, sharing reflections on their ministerial experiences. The spouses’ testimonies offered particularly profound insights, shedding light on the realities of being married to a permanent deacon. Their sharing highlighted both the beauty and challenges of marriage, inspiring all present to recognise and appreciate the vital role of family in ministry.
On Feb 23, the diocese commemorated the Jubilee of Deacons with a Eucharistic celebration presided over by Cardinal Sebastian Francis. Deacon Lazarus Jonathan, the Head of Permanent Deacons, delivered the homily, reinforcing the significance of their ministry. During the Mass, Cardinal Sebastian emphasised that permanent deacons extend the bishop’s presence within the communities they serve.
This year’s gathering was particularly significant as it included four candidates discerning their call to the permanent diaconate in the Diocese of Penang. Their presence added a sense of hope and continuity to the diaconal ministry. As the deacons reflected on their mission, the candidates were given a glimpse into the profound commitment and service that define the role of a permanent deacon.
