Pope Leo XIV on Sunday marked several significant observances, including Sunday of the Word of God, the World Day for those suffering from leprosy, and the conclusion of the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity.
Speaking to pilgrims gathered in St Peter’s Square for the recitation of the Angelus, the Pope recalled that “this Sunday, the Third Sunday in Ordinary Time, is the Sunday of the Word of God.”
He went on to explain that “Pope Francis instituted it seven years ago to promote throughout the Church a deeper knowledge of Sacred Scripture and greater attention to the Word of God, in the liturgy and in the life of our communities.”
“I thank and encourage all those who, with faith and love, commit themselves to this fundamental mission,” he said.
World Leprosy Day
Regarding World Leprosy Day, marked annually on Jan 25 to celebrate people who have experienced leprosy, raise awareness of the disease, and call for an end to leprosy-related stigma and discrimination, the Pope expressed his closeness to affected individuals and encouraged those who care for them.
“I express my closeness to all those affected by this disease. I encourage the Italian Association of Friends of Raoul Follereau and all those who care for people with leprosy, working to safeguard their dignity,” he said.
Week of Prayer for Christian Unity
Pope Leo also noted the conclusion on Sunday of the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity that took place this year from Jan 18 to 25, with the theme “There is one body and one Spirit, just as you were called to the one hope of your calling.”
He announced that in the afternoon he would celebrate Vespers at the Basilica of Saint Paul Outside the Walls with representatives of other Christian denominations, and expressed gratitude to all participants, including those following via media channels. – Vatican News
