PENANG – The Family Life Ministry of the Minor Basilica of St Anne, in collaboration with the St Anne’s Senior group, organised a marriage renewal ceremony for couples married for 25 years or more on May 26. The Sunday English Mass was presided over by Fr Nelson Joseph, with Deacons Dave Kameron and Lazarus Jonathan assisting.
Close to 37 couples registered for this event, including 15 couples celebrating their Silver anniversary, nine their Ruby, 11 their Golden, and two their Diamond Jubilee. The couples celebrating their Diamond Jubilee are in their 80s and have contributed actively to the Church community through their children and grandchildren.
Fr Nelson introduced each couple at the beginning of the Mass. In his homily, he emphasised the commitment these couples made to be faithful to their vows 25 or 60 years ago.
“In today’s Gospel, Jesus says, ‘And know that I am with you always, yes to the end of time.’ He is assuring us of His constant presence and faithfulness. These couples chose to embrace God’s love in their marriage vocation. Despite the struggles, they have remained committed to their vows by keeping God at the centre of their relationship,” Fr Nelson said.
He added that the renewal of marriage vows should inspire young people and the community to continue to flourish and grow in their marital lives.
Following the homily, all couples renewed their marriage vows, reminiscent of their wedding day. The committee then arranged a luncheon at a nearby Chinese restaurant. Fr Nelson opened the luncheon with a prayer, followed by a short praise and worship session led by the St Anne’s Seniors chairman, Joseph Lim. Everyone enjoyed the luncheon, with several couples sharing their tips for a successful marriage. – Herald Malaysia
